The need for medical terms training in I.T. has largely been driven by the key recommendations in the Wanless Report (2002) regarding future trends in the health service:

“Without a major advance in in the effective use of information and communications technology, the health service will find it increasingly difficult to deliver the efficient, high quality service which the public will demand”.

 Coincidently in 2002 ‘Delivering the NHS Plan’ stated that I.T. would support this vision with electronic records and electronic booking of appointments by 2005, together with a full array of clinical applications and functionality with electronic records to be available in all Primary Care Trusts by 2008
