Medical Terminology for Insurance Claims

There is a vast array of private medical insurance schemes in existence. Inevitably, people working in the insurance profession are brought into day to day contact with medical terminology and they need to have an understanding and working knowledge of medical terms, phrases and abbreviations used, and particularly the implications for insurance claims.

For example, staff in a variety of roles come into contact with medical terminology on many policies including, medical insurance, payment protection, critical illness, accident liability and life insurance.

• Claims Handlers are required to deal with medical reports and letters from a variety of medical specialists. They are also required to understand the nature and purpose of the various treatments for which the claims are made.

• Supporting the Claims Handlers are the team leaders and managers, who are expected to be a point of referral for the more complicated or less frequent terms.

Incorrect advice or unfamiliar terminology poses a serious commercial risk when it comes to approving medical reports or evidence, but also lack of understanding can often frustrate customers who may appear to know more about their condition than the insurance professional
